60's Illustration

Another Photoshop illustration for all you bloggers out there. This one is my homage to the 60s. Whenever I think of that era, I always picture Jackie Onasis, North by Northwest, and cool, air-conditioned lounges (Kubrick style, of course!)

As usual, I scanned this one in and played with different brushes, colors and techniques in Photoshop. I've made it a goal to make my digital stuff feel more hand-done. I'm still struggling against the computer with that. Hope you all like it and please let me know if there's anything I can improve on!!!

Hey Chris. I checked out your films this morning, and all I can say is that I loved them. You have such a nice grip on the subtle elements that give characters lives of their own. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

It was a real treat to see your student films. "The Gift" was a touching piece, really delightful.

Great sketching and characters too!

very nice work.

the brushes look like chalk pastel
on ingres, (or softer toothed paper.)

I'll throw these out here:
(you probably already know this)

You can paint an area of texture
with one type of brush - and erase back into it lightly with a different brush to hide the tiling effect of the brush's stamp

make your own textures and brushes. use paint, chalk, dirt, cloth aluminum foil etc.

Scan in the sample.
Convert to greyscale
Push the levels up a bit
make a small selection
go to edit-"define brush"
the new brush will appear at the bottom of the brushes list.

The "brushes presets" dialog offers a wide range of dynamics- fade effects, dual brush strokes, wet edges, scattering etc...

Wow, thanks so much for the warm reception to my films, everyone! they were alot of hard work but I am glad to be able to share them and have people enjoy them! I do miss the 2D artform and hope to one day get to work on some more.

Goobeetsa-thanks for that Photoshop tip...I never knew that! Please feel free to drop more technical advice like that, it never hurts!

Whoot lovely lady! Look at those hips and calves! Very nice color also. (Im starting to pay attention to color more, it's exciting!) Also loved your films. How long did you get to complete those films? I myself am working on one and Im having hard time for a 30 sec story with one character. I get about 4 weeks to do it. Any tips on your story process would help a lot. I really enjoy the stories you came up with. Thanks for sharing!

Pirate-the films took between 4-5 months each to complete. Basically from the beginning of the school year (sept) until xmas break (dec) we had to think up of an idea, board it and design the characters (while taking different classes like life drawing, design, story, etc.) Then from Jan till about mid april, we had to animate the whole thing... Hope this helps and good luck with your animation!!
